This website ( was referred to someone last week in electrical motor forum. It explains methods of calculating over current protection, short circuit protection, component protection and cable sizing in a power system. The calculations are understandable and easy to work out but my question is, is there another method of verifying or testing that the figures arrived at are correct. I mean is there power system design software that can prove these manual design calculations.

There are several software packages out there that will do short circuit, power flow and protection studies. Some are geared towards utilities and others toward industrial. I use EasyPower and the options I have allow me to do all the above as well as verify ratings of equipment and perform an arc flash study. EasyPower's website is Other packages are Aspen, EDSA, ETAP.

Do a search on the site. It is many times discussed in the past.
