Velocity of a sound wave in a heterogeneous medium (2 materials with an interface)

Q) When a sound wave is traveling through a structure made of 2 materials (i and ii in 1D dimension), there is a reflection and transmission of the sound wave at the interface.


Does reflection or transmission affect the speed of sound within any of the media?. I understand that speed of sound depends only on elastic modulus and density of the medium, but what exactly are the reflections and transmissions of the sound wave doing here?
 
The speed of sound in each material is, as you say governed by the usual equation. At the interface you have an impedance mismatch, which is the ideal keyword for your further research. This causes some of the energy in the wave to be reflected back. A typical example is acoustic intensity, where a sound wave in air is transmitted into a solid structure, or vice versa.
