VB and CAN(control area network)

I am going to start a project where I need to talk to a device using CAN. The engineers are making it sound like it is going to be dificult? Anybody ever work with this and implementing it with VB? from what I read it sounds like i just use the comport or is there a little more to it?. any info would be appreciated on this.
