Hi guys,

I am trying to simulate micro-indentation tests on given materials. I asked to compare a list of strains across different materials, namely, "Hydrostatic strain", "Deviatoric strain", "equivalent strain" and "effective strain". I am a bit confused about these strains and don't know whether they can be outputted directly from Abaqus that I am using or they have to be calculated from some other computed parameters. could anybody give me some hints, please?

Many thanks,
Michael

If ABAQUS can output hydrostatic or deviatoric strains, I would be a bit surprised. But you can certainly use the strain tensor to calculate them yourself in something like Excel.

Would a subroutine help? However, I am trying to get used to them now and it seems challeging for someone not from a programming background?

You can create new output variables in Abaqus that are mathematical combinations of existing ones, so you can calculate the hydrostatic strain from the e11, e22 and e33 (it is more commonly called mean strain or volumetric strain).

You can create variables for the components of the deviatoric strain (since it is a tensor) in the same way. For "equivalent" and "effective" strain make sure you check the equation defining these terms as there is no generally accepted definition of these quantities.
