We have designed the sprinkler system for a warehouse with 1400 GPM at 123 psi water demand. So due to High fire pump capacity, (Regarding NFPA) Is it permissible to have a variable speed drive for the fire pump? Because if only a limited number of sprinklers are activated, the large pump will not work properly. So it is better for the pump to operate at a slower speed.

Variable speed type listed (NFPA 20) fire pump controllers are available for both electric and diesel fire pumps. However there are other methods for keeping the pumps above minimum flow, which may be more appropriate, given that fire pumps do not operate continuously.
With fire pumps the most important consideration is that they MUST start when needed.
