I don't think the valve admitting the air was to be left open for very long. It would only be open long enough to diagnose the problem. I believe if cavitation is your problem, the "pumping gravel" noise should disappear almost immediately. The valve would then be closed, and other steps would be taken to permanently correct the cavitation problem.
