I frequently have customers (cheapskates) that want to use SOxx in lue of conduit. I seem to recall you can't just run SO all over the place instead of a clean fixed installation, I'd end up looking like those trade-show power distribution boxes. Do you recall what is allowed?

I'm about to go over this with yet another customer and since the machine has an SO cord depending from it already I can easily hear him arguing "that's what the machine already has".

I don't think I would EVER want to pull a legacy type aluminum bodied pin and sleeve unit energized at 480 volts. Too much chance of a 3 phase arc-over. The ones I am familiar with have a mechanically interlocking disconnect handle that engages a cam on the plug.

These are claimed to be load break rated to 200A and are available to 400A. Russellstoll / Tomas & Betts Corporation CAT310
The same catalog offers the ABB IEC 60 309 International Pin and Sleeve to 125A. This is probably similar to what Redsnake is describing.

No not at all if they where made of metal I wouldn't do it either.
Our plugs 3-fas 400VAC are always made in "plastic" that goes for most breaker casings too.
It's very unusual that they are made of metall.
You can buy them for heavy duty purposes but where I work they are 99% "plastic" everything bought new as well.

For a lot of applications I prefer the plastic load break plugs, but they do not tolerate the kind of abuse I see on our outdoor equipment. We have hundreds of these older heavy duty outlets, so a mass change out would give the accountants apoplexy.

If you take a 16 amp 3-N-PE here you could change the outlet and the plug for min. 10 EUR a kvalité brand circa 50 EUR.
I am not even sure it is possible to buy one in metal here anymore.
I think the ones we have is quite sturdy it is usually the lid that gets broken or maybe the fastening ears.
Our accountants does not understand electrical safety issues so, usually no one complains if you say it's a electrical safety hazard and it is illegal. ;-)
Before when we stil hade the old model we just changed them and sade we needed a neutral also mostly they just had 3-phases and earth.
