I am reading APA Oriented Strand Board publication, table 1 (allowable shear for horizontal L-P OSB panel diaphragm I note that 8d nail use is limited to panels of thickness of 3/8 and 7/16. Is my interpretation correct?

Please let me know if you agree.

Lutfi

It is my interpretation from the APA document and the 2003 IBC that the shear capacity of a wall system utilizing 8d nails has been approved and published for 3/8, 7/16 and 15/32. A minimum nail penetration into the framing of 1-3/8" is required.

archeng59, The publication is a product guide and it does not have a number, at least, on the version that I have.

just wondering, Lufti. Have two APA documents and unless, I'm blind, didn't see a Table 1 with nail sizes in the ones I have. the 2003 IBC, table 2306.3.1 matches what sduggan stated for shear walls. For horizontal diaphragms, 10d nails are the smallest nail size per 2306.3.2.

My apologies, I had the table mixed with APA printouts. It is an report published by ICBO Evaluation Service Inc.

Never mind my temporary lapse of memory. It must be an older guy thing.

what's the ICBO number? or ICC, which I think everything is now. I understand about the memory thing. I used to make fun of the older engineers I worked with and couldn't understand why they forgot stuff that seemed easy for me to remember. now, I'm the forgetful one. "what do you mean that happened two years ago? seems like a couple of months ago."

The document I had reviewed was APA document: Diaphragms and Shearwalls (Form 350.)
