The method im currently using for animations is:

taking snapshots of each assembly position, crop, format, etc.. in an image editor and drag them all into a gif animator.

I wondered what would be the next stage to further or upgrade my animations.... using differing techniques to increase quality?

With Mechanism module of Pro/E you can capture motion of your assembly to MPEG or you can capture JPEGs for each frame. With MPEG or individual frame JPEGs you can easily create a GIF animation. Without all the croping and formating.
