In my last messgae it seemed like everyone preferred the AMD over Pentium. What are your thoughts on the Xeon Processor? This system listed below is $1000 (refurbished from dell). An extra 1-gig of RAM would be an additional $150. Thanks in advance again for your time with this.

Dell Precision Workstation 670: Intel 3.00GHz, 2MB L2 Cache

Memory: 1GB DDR2 400MHz (2x512MB)

Why do they put Braille dots on the keypad of the drive-up ATM?

I don't know much about the Xeons, but that looks like a great deal--if you're staying near your target price.

Just getting my new system up and rolling now--cost 3X as much! But it's my primary workstation.

Thanks for your input, it is appreciated.

I think I'll do it.

Contact your VAR or SolidWorks about running Xeon. I do not know of anyone using it for SW.

I'm using Xeon at work and at home and it runs great.

That's a really good deal you're getting from Dell. You should have no problems with it.

I will start with my VAR.

Thanks and I will update you guys with what I find out.

We've been using Precision 650's for some time and just started getting some 670's. You will easily be able to run SWX on it. If you happen to use any COSMOS products you'll be even more surprised as it will crunch those calcs like a kid eating candy.

No worries you'll be good to go.

Great News! Thanks to everyone who has responded. My VAR also said that the Xeon will work perfectly.

OK, I finally made the purchase ($1100) total with shipping. This should be overkill for home use but that's OK with me. What does it mean when your home workstation is about 3 times better than the one at work?

Config 3 - Blonde

It means your boss/company is wasting money. Payroll is one of the largest expenses in running a company. Time wasted on a slow computer is money wasted, not to mention possible lost data issues. A CAD workstation more that 2 years old is wasting money. Convince them to upgrade your workstation and let your old computer become a really good desktop for somebody who does not do CAD. Tell'em I said so!

If you are making large assemblies, I suggest updating to 2gb RAM.
