Hi,

Trying to find some thread data (i.e. Maj. Dia, Pitch Dia. etc...etc..) for the following thread:

1.563 - 18 UNS - 3A

The machinist's handbook outlines some unified thread types but does not seem to include this UNS thread! unless I am looking in the wrong place! any help would be appreciated

Thanks

johni357,

My copy of Machinery's Handbook lists UNS threads as "selected combinations" of diameter and pitch. UNS threads are listed in Table 14 labeled "Standard Series and Selected Combinations". The catch is that the 1.563-18 thread is listed as UNEF (extra fine) not UNS. the good news is the table gives you all the data you need for the 1-9/16-18 thread.

Timelord, I think you meant Table 4.

"Art without engineering is dreaming; Engineering without art is calculating."

Have you read faq731-376 to make the best use of Eng-Tips Forums?

MM,

My bad, Table 4 is correct. In the section called Screw Thread Systems.

In UNS the S means special, so by definition it is not a standard size and is unlikely to be in a pre-calculated table. This means you should calculate it from scratch using the definitions in ASME B1.1 or equivalent.

From what Timelord says your example may not actually be a special but a standard UNEF.

For true specials I find useful but as it's free you need to verify it. I've checked it a couple of times and found it correct but that's no guarantee.

The below is the results for your thread, the diameters are given at the bottom of the pop up.

KENAT, probably the least qualified checker you'll ever meet...
