Hi guys,

Probably an easy question for you but I am bit confused here....So I want to specify an unequal angle and I am not sure which axis to take into account in order to calculate bending moment resistance and second moment of area for the deflection check. Please see attached sketch with the section and the applied point load direction.

Am I right to say that it's the minor axis where the load is subjected?

Agree with Celt83 - great reference, takes care of the single angle questions in our office.

Redtelis, it's not an easy question. Unbraced single angle flexural members are probably the hardest standard shape to understand and design. Unless you have that angle bolted to a wall every couple feet, you'll need to consider the principal axis, not the minor geometric. You'll also have to consider torsion since you're not loading it through the shear center.

The code provisions for AISC 360 are in Chapter F. The math can get a bit involved...
