Are there any methods to evaluate behavior of pressurized jet underwater? I'm trying to evaluate velocities and velocity distribution of jet coming out of a circular nozzle underwater.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Greg

The Bernoulli Equation should apply.

If you're feeling particularly scholarly, this pdf file might help. It's a paper from Stanford's Center for Turbulence Research. I should point out that I only skimmed it, and can't attest to its relevance.

Actually there are large energy losses and the Bernoulli Equation does not apply. Overall estimates could be made by momentum balance but this will not give you velocity distributions. I have a simple reference somewhere - I will dig it out.

. What I have in front of me is Paper No 2409 from the American Society of Civil Engineers "Diffusion of submerged Jets" by Alberston, Jensen and Hunter Rouse dated 1948 - plus written discussions by Holderson, Citrini, Bains and Henry - these papers give you exactly what you are looking for including distribution curves and formulae but I am sure you can find a simple summary in a modern text book. -

Thanks Bris! Is there any way that you can fax it to me, if it's not a thick paper?

geg1633 - sorry I am in Yemen - so not easy - also it is useful to see the duiscussions as well as the original paper. It is very much one of the classic papers of hydraulics - plenty of references to it on the internet and it should be available in any good technical library.
