could someone please help
explain to me what the difference is between gross structural discontinuities and local structural discontinuities? My understanding so far is that gross discontinuities affect the entire stress profile (i.e. changes in wall thickness) and local only effects a small portion of the stress profile (i.e. a small notch or fillet).
However I’ve the definition explained several times and it seems vague and open to interpretation. I’m struggling to understand why we categorize structural discontinuities into these categories and why it is useful.
