Hi all,

I am looking for some information regarding ultrasonic welding. I have found some guidelines that show as minimum recomended wall thickness of a part at 1.6mm and some at 2~2.5mm. I understand this is not really an exact science, but I was hoping to get some feedback from someone that is experienced in this process.

So, is it common practice to ultrasonically weld a small part (40mm x 40mm x 10mm) in ABS at a 1.8mm wall thickness? The design has an Energy Director and uses a Step Joint method.

Any help appreciated! Thanks,
Ivan

Hello Ivan,

We do weld small parts ultrasonically. You have to make sure that you have tight tolerances particularly on the flatness of your weld surfaces.

We use DuKane's equipment and their engineers provide us with a wealth of information on our joint design. You may want to consult with your equipment manufacturer on your particular joint design.
