Beam elements apply for 1-D models, like rods truss-bridges beams...the longest dimension is 10 times or above the others.

Shell elements apply for 2-D modelslike a plate under compression, a pressure vessel...shells are best suited for models where the wall thickness is smaller compared to the overall size (l/t>10), and u have to make sure that the model can be compressed to a mid-surface for idealization.
