Does anyone know what type of foam is usually used inside a car bumper? I think it looks a bit yellowish.

Expanded polypropylene is the foam type. Colors vary, usually they are black.

Would you know why polypropylene is used instead of polystyrene?

Lower stiffness, better resistance to multiple impacts. Use the following link to find more techical information on EPP from JSP/Arpro, the leading producer of automotive EPP:

As well as the above, one heck of lot better resistance to solvents used in automotive paint systems, fuel, lubricants and degreasing agents might have something to do with it.
