Turn a .dwg file into a part in SolidWorks

Just beginning to mess around with SolidWorks. I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow take a .DWG file that a client sent me and import it into SolidWorks as a part (.SLDPRT)?

I prefer to create the part from scratch within SW.

Unless it's your most-favoritest-drawing-in-the-world I'd just redraw it...depending upon what your needs are.

I usually open them (dwg files) directly in SolidWorks OR sometimes copy paste the required sketch from dwg to SW part file.

Yes you can use the 2D to 3D tools inside SW to make it into a 3D solid. It is a lot of hassle versus just redoing it, but the tools are there along with the help to help you through the process... if you are not familiar with the product your going to want to read the help and maybe call your VAR when you have further trouble.

I learned very quickly to never trust an imported DWG or DXF drawing for accuracy. There's often too many non-intersecting points and overidden dimensions.

It's much safer to construct the solid feature sketches from a print.

It's too easy to 'cheat' in *.dxf, *.dwg - and parasolids are next to useless. You'll be happier in the long run if you re-draw it in SolidWorks.

Nella95 ... Why do you feel "parasolids are next to useless"? They are the native format files of the Parasolid engine used by SW, and as such are much less prone to translation erors than any other file format.

I retract that statement. (Just-recent events made me blame the parasolid file format when it could easily have been myself or my local network's fault.)
