When a pipe pile is welded to a pile cap with a CJP weld with backing, is this considered a Tubular Connection? If so do the welders performing these welds need to be qualified on pipe if the pile pipe is less than 24"OD?
Thanks

If either member of the connection is a tubular member, it is a tubular connection. If the connection involves a CJP welded from one side without the use of backing (steel), the joint and the welders must be qualified with the T,Y, and K test depicted in Clause 4 of D1.1. The requirements have not changed in many years, so the edition invoked by the Owner isn't going to make a difference.

Best regards - Al
