Trying to ad a balloon using component reference

Im working in a drawing trying to add a few balloons to some components in a small assembly. My problem is the balloon text does not display the Component Ref information, it is blank. Here is what I'm doing.

I select the Annotation Tab, then Balloon, Set balloon style to None, and Balloon Text to Component Ref. then I select the component to balloon. I then place to balloon on the component but the balloon text does not populate, it is left empty

any help is appreciated

Style has to be circular split line to show component reference.
