Truly robust, waterproof, excellent pipe coatings?

We have a lot of carbon steel pipe running through pipe bridges containing liquid NH3. We are constantly painting/repainting/repainting to maintain mechanical integrity and some of the areas require expensive scaffolding to get to.

Anyone have any experience with a coating other than primer/paint? I've read of polymer coatings that are applied almost like paint. Something that can handle expansion/contraction, sunlight, etc. I expect it to cost more the first time, but if it lasts....

Here is a neat process. I've never seen it done in real life, and don't know if it would fit the spec.

The principal problem is that you are now maintenance painting on in situ pipework which does not offer the best conditions for maximising coating longevity. A number of studies have shown that sealed thermal spray aluminium (TSA), when correctly applied, offers a significant durability extension compared to other coating systems. If you can get a survey to confirm satisfactory application conditions and accessibility it should be a strong candidate.

More info....

1) Is something leaking onto the pipe ?

2) Are you near the ocean, brackish water, industrial smoke area?

3) Is the coatings failure at the "top" of horizontal runs, near flanges or valve stems ?

4) What temperature is the pipe and is it subject to thermal cycling ?

5) Is there coating failures under insulation ?

No one painting/coating system is best for all circumstances..
