Believe it that someone didn't know what Trojans were . . . - and not the ancient Greek state warriors . . .

We used to cut off the tips of them and use them for the rubber membranes for triaxial testing - they rolled down easily and, as indicated, Harvard recommended them!

BigH...same here. Being a "Sowers-ite" (Harvard, 1945), we used them routinely. Quality was good. Readily available. Cheap....and they worked great!

My mentor went to Harvard as well - MAJ Matich - you might have known or heard of him when you were with Trow. He worked/became President of Geocon which was an offshoot of the Foundation Company of Canada. Actually HQ Golder was coming over to work when Seychuk, Milligan, et. al., broke off of Geocon to open up Golder. Fred studied under the Casagrandes. Interesting that one of the Indian geotechnical texts that I have was written by an Indian who also went to Harvard about that same time - Kurnian.

I think Fred graduated from there in 1950 or so - he had a math degree I think from Kiwiland, then as a research project he determined ability of tanks and armoured vehicles to pass on certain types of ground based on the depth of penetration of a 45 bullet into the ground. Interesting - something the Germans needed in Norway as their military never took into account the high sensitivity of their clays - first few tanks had no problems, then the problems started . . . I'll write you off line on something I'd like to discuss.

Cheers,

BigH...send it. Long weekend here, with Labor Day on Monday.

Dang, I thought this thread was going to be about USC football, and I was going to make a crude comment about the other kind.

David - Cornell rules for me! Then Stanford because one of my high school friends is the DL coach there! Everything okay with your slides?

14 hours of .ppt slides is a lot of &*^%&%& work, but I got them finished up last week. Still need to put together a couple of worked examples (liq'n triggering, seepage), but aside from that, I'm ready to go. I've written as much as I could on the slides

Got some money exchanged, and now I'm a multi-millionaire in rupiahs. (Of course, the hotel will cost close to a million a night.) How do children learn to count money with so many zeros?

That's a pretty cheap hotel - - Not staying in the Borobudur I take it . . . I would have changed the money over here as you are now carrying a very heavy load! When I was first in Indonesia, the largest bill they had was 10,000 IDR - or, at that time about $6 or so. Now the largest bill is 100,000 or about $11. Still a wad to carry about. By the way - hotels do take credit cards! They do work in Jakarta. Saw a guy in Padang years ago carry two grocery store plastic bags full of IDR to the bank . . . The tellers can count bills faster than I can keep up . . . SMS (text) me when you get in . . . 0821 88 16 3232 .
