Triple wood "beam" not connected

I deal with a situation where an old house we are renovating has three old-style (rough) pieces of 2x10 with joists on one side. There was a wall underneath, acting as a load bearing wall, that needs to be removed. However, I see that the joists have only been nailed from the side of the 1st of the three 2x10s that act as a beam. Using Simpson-Strongties is a solution for hanging the joists but I am afraid that this only hangs them on the 1st of the three elements that make up the beam. The first thing I did was to use lag screws (about 5.5" long), one for every bay (approximately 16" O.C.) but I wonder if that is adequate to make the three 2x10s work together.

The approach you've taken is correct/conventional. You just need to run the numbers to validate your solution. The screws need to be able to transfer at least 2/3 of the applied loads to the second ply and 1/3 of the applied load to the third ply.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

You can always add help if you see sagging, etc. One such method would be to screw a metal strap underneath.

What concerns me most is the separation I see. Please see the picture with the separation between the 1st 2x10 and the other two. That indicates that the 1st one was taking the loads for so many years and it is deformed. I wonder if I will have to replace it, in which case I may as well replace it with steel. I used the GRK UberGrade Structural screw (Lag Screw Alternative.) I am contemplating about adding another one on each bay but I am worried with all those screws or nails for the Simpson Strongtie hangers and the 5/16" structural screws if they eventually weaken the wood in the end. It will be like swiss cheese.
