I tried it a while back at V1. Could not get it to do what we needed. I will try again now that it is at V2.

I didnt try it. But as per what I understand, It can be used by people who dont have access to a copy of SW. Using this tool they can create a blank assembly file with blank parts and blank sub assemblies.

Usually the output gives a desired tree structure for the actual designer to work with. Designer can now, open parts and add geometry and build the features.

V2 allows an existing structure to be opened and gives a perfect graphical representation of the hierarchy.

I'm guessing this is in direct competition with Solid Edge's Virtual Components that has been out for a long time. It allows designers to create the BOM structure, populate part and assembly files, all without making any geometry.

The concept feeds nicely into a PDM system as well by defining item masters and structure without actually having to have a design completed. It allows for planning and cooperative, simultaneous design work.

From your description, it sounds very similar but, in SW, the term Virtual Components is used for parts which only exist in an assy. They can be "dummy" parts without geometry (for BOM inclusion), or fully modelled parts (for manufacturing). If needed, they can be saved externally as regular standalone parts.

Treehouse is similar to SolidMap from (

but, at the moment, is nowhere near as functional.

While researching the answer to your question, I found out the one I tried was: TreeWorks 1.0 for SolidWorks by The Delta Group Ltd.

I was trying to build a Bill of Material in picture form, such as a tree. With the top level bill at top of tree or on left would be OK. Then the next level assembly below that, without any part levels showing.
