When calculating head of the system, I want to know the exact meaning of '+' or '-' for velocity head and friction head. Please kindly help me.

DSL = Static suction lift - velocity head at suction + total friction head in suction line

DSH = Static suction head + velocity head at pump suction flange – total friction head in suction line
