Was wondering if anyone knows of some good resources (detailed) on torsion spring design? I found this:

The dimensions of the design space is fixed. The pre-load can be between 2-3.1 Nm.

About the natural frequencies of the spring itself. Can you explain you reasoning? I compute about 105Hz for the torsional natural freq. for the spring with d=2.54mm, and axial nat. freq of 92 Hz.

Since you didn't provide environment and type of use of the spring I was just checking about the resonance. What is the minimum gap between the coils that you desire at maximum deflection?

Min. gap between coils is 0.075mm. But this must take into account statistical manufacturing errors.

If coils should not touch at any cost this gap is a risk. I do not believe that a spring manufacture can assure that gap at maximum deflection (over 260 degrees). To my opinion you should design a spring with much larger gap and it can be done but, the springs will be more expensive. Did you considered other spring materials too? How many springs are you intend to manufacture since you speak on statistical analysis?

I have not considered other materials. Have any in mind?
I did think about the coils touching especially if it resonates. I thought about including a damping mechanism possibly over the coils.
In terms of manufacturing. Potential manufacturing is very large (>100,000) if the rest of the device functions very well. Right now it is in the prototype stages and will be experimentally tested thoroughly. (Sorry, can't reveal actual app. on the forum)
