I have a top down assembly that became corrupt so I had to go to the back-up file from the day before. There is a part that was created in-context after the save date of the assembly that I would like to use (not have to re-create). The parts’ shape is determined by other parts in the assembly. Is there a way to insert the part and re-attach those relationships?

Bring the part into the assembly. Edit the part within the assembly and edit the pertinent sketch(es). Using your 'Display/Delete Relations', delete the existing external references, then redo them. You could also select each reference, without deleting it (in the Display/Delete window) and try redefining it in the context of the new assembly.

What about the mates? Just let it float and define the sketches?

If you have replaced the corrupt file with the back-up copy (same name, same location) you should be able to just insert the missing in-context file. Once re-positioned (using regular mates) the geometry should reassociate itself.

The part is newer than the assembly.

As long as the parts that were referenced by the in-context part are in the assy, that shouldn't matter.
