When I unmaximize(restore) the sw2003 window, to see something on the desktop, and then maximize it again, all the toolbars get moved and dont restore to their original position. Is there a way to lock them where they belong?
Not that I know of. However, rather than "unmaximizing" & changing the window size (& consequently the layout), just minimize the window to the taskbar. That way the window size is not altered & the layout will remain the same.

I agree with the blimeylimey guy.. thats the way to do it.. when you "Restore Down" the technical term for what you are doing.. the toolbars will play catch-up and scramble for territory inside the solidworks window. Just minimize, and maximize the window instead. you can always hit the show desktop button on the taskbar too.
The need for resizing the window would be when saving i.e. jpg picures because they will be of exact SW window size. But in that case you could resize the model window only, not the application.
The thing I do to take JPEG files are screen shots. Paste the screen shot into Paint Shop pro and crop out the image. Then I can resize it to what ever I need it to be. It is a little longer but I get a nice clean JPEG file when I'm done.
The whole time I do it this away - I don't lose my Toolbars
