Tool-Tips to Blame??? 1

Good Morning,

My colleagues and I are experiencing slowness in our models, which seems to caused by, for one, tool-tips. Dragging parts into assemblies from the feature manager tree especially causes problems, and the tool-tips seem to "flicker." Sometimes we can click in the viewing area, which will hold the system up for a while then finally bring it back to normal.

I know you will ask about our system specs. We already know we need to update our driver, and maybe some other things. In the meantime, though, is there a way to turn these tool-tips off? We really do not need them.

These are already off. I'm talking about feature/part names that appear when the cursor is over the model or feature manager tree. Ex - "cog<1>(Excluded from BOM)" when the curser is over my center of gravity part.

NVIDIA Corporation
Card: Quadro FX 500/AGP/SSE2
Driver: 6.14.10.5218

Apparently, this combo used to be supported and was on the list for SW. This was back when we got SW and computers for it (right before '05 came out). Now, the driver is no longer recommended. One of the guys here updated his driver and didn't see any positive results. We are about to upgrade to 2006.

Are these models load on the suspected systems HD or are you working over the network? Also, are you using a PDM program like PDMWorks or some other brand?

Those drivers are not supported and i would update them according to the SW website as supported. That could cause a problem and it would be the fastest to update and confirm there is or isn't the problem.

DL those drivers.

1) Uninstall the active Nvidia drivers
2) Reboot
3) Install these drivers
4) Reboot
5) test

sldwrks84 ... Did you deselect the Dynamic Highlights ...? Did it turn off your tool tips & did it help performance?

How many parts does you assembly contain and how many mates do you have so far? Both can affect performance (especially over 300 mates/assembly).

Sorry for the delay in replying...

Heckler - I am working with files that are on my local drive, copied from PDMWorks.

SBaugh - Thankyou, I will try installing those drivers and see what happens.

CorBlimey - Yes, I did deselect Dynamic Highlights. It stopped the tool tips from appearing in the model view, however they still cause problems from the FMT. I think this may be a windows setting and maybe cannot be turned off???

Regg - My assembly file is 11.5 MB with 392 parts, and 209 top-level mates.

This is a problem I've been dealing w/ for some time. Files like the one mentioned above take 1/2 hour to 1 hr. or longer to open up. Especially when they contain parts w/ multiple configurations. For example, we use structural members, like tubing, with configurations from 6" to 100" in 1/8" increments. We've done everything from comparing all settings (SW and other) on my computer to that of my colleagues, to installing 2006, with no luck. What goes wrong on my machine works fine on theirs. I'm devoting all of today to investigating what's wrong to fix it, or prove to my supervisors that I need a new machine.

I will update my drivers and report back the results.

Thanks for the help so far!

BTW, my system info is below:

SW2006 SP0.0
NVIDIA Quadro FX 500, Driver 6.14.10.5218
Intel Pentium Processor 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
XP Professional 5.1.2600, SP1.0
1GB RAM
58.51 GB Free disk space
Virtual Memory set to 1536 (Paging file size? I read somewhere that initial and max should be set to the same thing???)

Yes that's true, so this away the Page file will not grow or get smaller in size.

ok, I'm a little paranoid about this.....when uninstalling my current driver (add/remove programs), picking "NVIDIA Display Driver" won't uninstall my video card will it? Obviously, I'm not very good w/ IT.

Hello,

So far I've performed tests using OpenGL, Hardware Acceleration, & dxdiag, and installed the new drivers. All of which did not help.

I found a thread:
thread559-108407
that is nearly exactly my problem. I modified the script setting (didn't help) and there's no chance that we will switch virus software.

I'm going to suggest to IT that we uninstall/reinstall mcafee to a slightly earlier version (since these problems where magnified when it was updated).

Thanks to everyone for your help. If you have any more suggestion, feel free!

As a performance comparison test, can you get IT to temporarily disable McAffee on your computer while you run SW.

SBaugh, I can't believe it! All those agonizing weeks of waiting and there was the fix the whole time!

I'd seen that FAQ before, but thought it only applied when you were considering re-installing SW, not another program like McAfee! Especially since I had just installed 2006...shouldn't all the settings have been default? Do you think some were carried over from '05?

At any rate, IT WORKED! Thanks a million!!!!!!!!

It is odd though. Do you think this fixes some kind of bug, or just a weird combo of settings? Perhaps you would recommend my taking note of what settings I change and when from now on, in order to determine adverse results?

That's amazing, thanks again!

When you install the next major version of SW and if you have a preivous version installed or if the Registry is still intact, then the new version simply copies the Registry and uses it. You probably had a problem in in SW05, but were not aware of it. By resetting the Registry you lose all you settings, but it's better then crashing.

Once you get your settings the way you want them use the Copy settings wizard to save you settings out, incase in the future you have to do this again.
