...a mechanical engineer.

I did some structural design for a buried concrete tank and thrust block a year or so ago. Subsequently, I was asked to size tension rods, bolts, and plates for a restrained ductile iron pipe joint, which was to be housed in the buried concrete tank. This DIP is very large (60" dia.), and the restrained flange connection was going to see working forces of 33 kips per tension rod (a set of 8 rods).

It was a rush to get this checked (like always). My immediate thoughts were: Where is the mechanical engineer? and, ah...fatigue!

Should I be protesting this type of design as an EIT? Or, should I start reading the ASME design manuals and prepare for this sort of request in the future (we recently started doing a lot of the structural work for the buried buildings housing this mechanical gobbledygook?

Greg: Not sure how that cheers me up! Would you be comfortable in designing (let alone certifying with a sign/seal) a structural building component? You shouldn't be as I am 99.999999999% sure your governing ethics jurisdiction disapproves! [bigsmile]

Hard to say whether I'd stress about it since over the years I've designed and engineered cars, cables, winch gear, electronics and agricultural plants. As an EIT you are perfectly placed to learn about a job as you are doing it, but then you aren't the one sealing it. As to what happens after you are a PE, either you refuse to perform any calculation that isn't set out in the rules, or you learn more and learn to do it properly (ie get it checked) before signing it off. The latter is perfectly normal for any real engineer, some of us even have to invent new procedures, not just blow the dust off a textbook occasionally.

a7, I have been trying to figure out your logo "In Russia building design you!" What exactly does it mean?

BA: I hope you have 2 hours to read this: Link

In lieu of that, it can be summed up as quips/jokes derived from an observation on the perceived toughness of Russian people and in their culture. "In Russia..." jokes are thoroughly embedded in internet memes.

Try saying it to yourself with a Russian accent and in a forceful, dominant manner; I think you will quickly get a feel for it!
