Hello,

For a customer I have to recalculate flanges for a heat exchanger. I need the minimum and maximum allowable gasket seating stresses of a Titanium Gr.1 (ASTM B265 Gr.1) Ø1199xØ1145x6 mm (47.2"x45"x0,25") solid flat gasket.

Is there any literature where I could possibly find these data, or is there anybody how knows this?

Kind regards,
Kelly

Kelly, the manufacturer MUST have this data for the gasket he's selling with certification. Otherwise you don't buy!

The thing is that the design code of the vessel is ASME VIII. No problem here. It has been built in 2001. But the customer requested in 2004 a flange calculation according to the Dutch Rules for Pressure Vessels. People at my company received this calculation from the manufacturer and then added this to a flange bolt-up procedure in which we calculated the torque with the manufacturers results. However, it seems that the manufacturers calculation was not checked. The customer now found something that is not 100% correct and requested some clarification. All questions they have I can explain, except their question how the gasket seating stresses where established.

That is our problem right now. It is not a problem if we have to change the calculation, but we must clarify where gasket parameters come from.

Kind regards,
Kelly

Per gr2vessels, you should contact one of the bigger manufacturers applications engineers. I generally find them to be very helpful.

Now, are you talking about the "y" value used in Appendix 2 design, or are you talking about applied assembly stress?

Regards,

Mike

I have found out that the factor Y, the minimum allowable seating stress, one of the parameters is which I need. The Dutch Rules for Pressure Vessels require two more allowable stresses: maximum allowable seating stress at RT, and at design temperature (260 ºC). As far as I know, there is no other design code that works similar to our Rules.

I have had contact with a gasket manufacturer and a heat-exchanger manufacturer which uses solid titanium gaskets. I have not had the time to figure out wether the formula's they provided can be of use for me. I have yet to study them.
