I am calculating rebound settlements along the recompression line. Just wondering, how fast does rebound occur after the removal of surcharge? I understand that the soil will swell slightly once the surcharge is removed. If the rebound is not instantaneous, will it help to counteract the secondary consolidation settlement?

By rebound, I am assuming you are referring to unloading? For a saturated soil this is analogous to consolidation, however mv will be different and affect the calculated cv.

when unloading the consolidation test, you can take time readings. You can use those time readings to calculate the time rate. It'll be quick though.

Unloading will not effect secondary compression directly.
