I live in an allotment that has a bridge (rated at 25 tons) across a small creek ~30 ft span that consists of I beams between the abutments with timber deck boards (4X12) lag bolted into a board that sits on top of the I-beam (not sure I know the proper name of the component of a bridge?)
The lag bolts on many of the boards are missing and several of the deck boards are loose. Several locals as used web belts to lash down the boards to keep them from popping up.
I need to get someone to come in a repair the decking. I am assuming a structural engineer to get a recommendation on an appropriate approach and the a group that does these kinds of bridges to do the work?? Or is this something we could do with engineering supervision???
I can see damage on some of the deck boards that would (to me) suggest they need to be replaced. The boards are all weathered. Not sure if/when there were last treated or if treating should be a regular maintenance step???
Anyone know of a "care and feeding" type users guide to these kinds of bridges. So I know what to ask for and when someone is trying to upsell....
Not thinking of doing this without professional onsite oversight, just asking for suggestions/recommendations on most cost effective way of approaching getting this repair work done and thoughts on maintenance going forward.
Bridge has been around for 40-50 years. I have not seen any paperwork on it yet so don't know if the present bridge is that age or ????
Thoughts??
