HOW CAN I CHECK THE TILTING PAD JOURNAL BEARING CLEARANCE WITH 5 PADS? (THE PUMP SHAFT IS NOT TAKEN OUT)..WHAT ARE THE METHODS?

The only experience I have with determining tilt pad bearing clearance is with the bearing off the machine and using a mandrel...pushing or pulling the bearing unit thru the limits of clearance. Something like described in the attached document. I don't know how you do it with the bearing still mounted in the machine.

It cannot be done properly with the shaft installed. The best you can do is a lift check which only checks one pad (for an odd number of pads).
