Hi friends, I make design of new part for hot pressing from SMC prepreg. And I need to add two usual fittings with external thread 1" and 1/2" as elements of the part. But my moldmaker says that it is impossible to make threads from SMC well as it's impossible to cut threads on ready parts! I absolutely do not want to use special small metal inserts for bolts and use flanges but not standard inch fittings! Could you please recommend how to make thread from SMC composite?

Hope for your kind help!

You have provided very little useful information. Sure it is possible to mold or to cut threads in SMC. They will not be as strong or durable as threads in metal. Will they be strong enough for your application? That is for you to determine. Perhaps your molder has already decided, based on his knowledge.

Thank you for reply!
We need usual fittings 1" and 1/2" for standard nuts on our part, max pressure is 10 bar, but temperature cycles until 120-150C are possible - that's why I do not want any inserts, but only original SMC body.

Oh, maybe somebody knows examples of threaded SMC parts or even of SMC fittings? Send me please useful links for understanding of problem.
