thickness testing for a steel plate

I am looking for another method of testing the thickness of a steel plate that doesn't involve conventional methods (ie caliper, etc). I am quite aware of ultrasonic testing. However, I am looking for some other nondestructive method of quantitatively determining the thickness of a steel plate. I would appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks

Optics require that you measure from both sides and calculate the actual thickness.
Radiation gages are what are used in the steel mills. They are fast, accurate, and can be used on hot product.

Have you looked at the UT equipment used to survey tank floors? They can scan a lot of area quickly. It really depends on the resolution that you need.
