About 20mm to 50mm seems to be common, depending upon the size of panel. I have seen "strips" (150mm wide by 1500mm long) that were in the 20mm thickness range, and have seen panels in the 1m square range with greater thickness, up to about 50mm, though I have seen similar full size panels in the 20mm range.

Thermal issues, rigidity of attachment, type of attachment (mechanical vs. adhesive, stainless steel vs. typical carbon steel), wetting and drying, natural rock integrity, sawing/polishing, sealants, and handling have all been issues to consider in the failure investigations I have done on exterior granite (or marble) cladding.

Good luck.
