THETA WHAT ???

Ok, I give up.

Ref. ASME VIII Div 2 (2007) page 4-54, equation 4.3.39 for 'sig'sm. Does anyone know what 'theta' represents here ? 'Alpha' is the half cone angle but there seems to be no relevant reference to 'theta'. It appears in bending and torsional stress equations.

It's not that that I didn't like the answers .. they were in good faith but did not answer my question. I think it is a Code cock-up, and I was looking for a response from someone who has done similar calculations for a large vessel cone.

To repeat my concern ..the angle 'theta' appears in a diagram as an angle that could be twist or some sort of meridional location ... but theta also appears directly in bending and torsional stress equations, one as a 'cos and the other as a'sin', so changing the angle will decrease one and increase the other. Makes no sense to me.
