Thermowell

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the holes on the thermowell attached are correct. They happen to be oval shaped and my supplier says it is not a fault and that it is caused by the welding process.

In my opinion, this looks much more like mechanical damage ... not welding distortion.

I don't think your supplier is telling the truth..

Was the thermowell fabricated in China ??

Just a guess here, but was the thermowell mechanically forced into the flange and then welded ?

How about a picture where the flange holes are in clear focus, not the blue sweater in the background...

I'd have a hard time believing that originally round holes are ovalized to that extent by a welding process. But you might want to give us just a bit more info... Like what welding process is being referred to - weld buildup of a flange face will have different impact than a welneck flange to pipe weld.

You'll also need to define "correct". If you specified slotted holes, then they appear to be good. If you specified round holes, with a particular tolerance, then oval holes would probably not be correct. If you specified (not "expected") ASME B16.5 (what year?) compliance, then look up the tolerances in B16.5. If some other code, check that code.

I agree with MJ Cronin and jte. That doesn't look like a welding deformity.
