Hello,
I have a question regarding flanged thermowells. What is the difference between a thermowell with cover flange and a thermowell with/ for retaining flange and how is it decided what type to specify?

Thanks

Indy,

Would you care to answer the questions in your other post first?

Eng tips works best when the OP engages with replies.

And can you add a sketch to show what you mean please. I think I know what you mean but would like to confirm.

Hi Please find attached a sketch showing a 4” pipe. How do we determine whether it is cover flange or thermowell with/ for retaining flange? The tee piece height is approximately 184mm.

Thanks

I'm still confused.

This bit doesn't make any sense to me I'm afraid - "whether it is cover flange or thermowell with/ for retaining flange? "

A flanged thermowell is a single forged or welded or screwed item which allows the RTD element to be non pressure retaining where it is screwed into the thermowell hole.

Mechanically it is the same as a blank flange.

The length of the thermowell is calculated by the vendor taking into account the length of the tee piece and the flow velocity and density of the fluid to prevent it vibrating to pieces.

Your diagram doesn't show how the thermowell is attached to the blind flange. This is either welded or screwed into it normally, but can be made as a single forging also.

Hello Littleinch,
The thermowell flange would be bolted to the flange of the tee, I am also a little confused over cover flange and with/for retaining flange.

Thanks

Please state your thermowell model, provided by your supplier and the vendor drawing.

Please explain what you mean by "cover flange" and "retaining flange".

There is only one flange.
