Thermal Expansion

Thermal expansion is calculated by a coef of expansion per degree temperature.

Question:
If one wishes to calculate the "growth" in diameter of a metal bar- wouldn't it be necessary to calculate the growth on the radius of the bar?

It would be growing by the radial thickness-right?

That's right, it expands the same proportionally in all directionn, so radius or diameter it's all the same. Remember the length will change by the same % also.

(Think of it as a scaling up on a CAD drawing)

Remember for rings and cylinders the expansion increases both the OD and ID.
