Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to thermally decompose KHCO3 to KOH; perhaps it is possible but some specific conditions are required.

I know that KHCO3 decomposes into K2CO3, H2O and CO2 but the question is if it could decompose to KOH?

Thanks!

I hope this helps:

From a chemistry book on amphoteric equilibria:

A 0.1 M HCO3- water solution results in pH = 8.3 [≈] [½] (pK1 + pK2)

since [H3O+] [≈] (K1K2)[½]

K1 = 2.3 [×] E-8
K2 = 4.8 [×] E-11
