Terminal sizing

Hi,
Does anyone know of a standard procedure for the sizing of electrical terminals? My company goes with the rule of thumb 2.5mm2 for control and 4mm2 for motors.

Terminals must only be sized for the expected maximum conductor size that is going to be used. This often also comes with a minimum dimension as well, so attention must be paid in both directions.

For motor terminals, don't forget to account for necessary over sizing of conductors due to voltage drop, that is a very common mistake in terminal selection, i.e. the terminals are left too small for field wiring.

If your company is looking at a certain arc flash rating, you need to look at that issue also.
If your looking to build to a certain standard on parts, ratings such as UL/CSA CE compliance, etc...
What standards are you looking at, be specific?

Thanks for the replys. My company designs control panels and if the client doesnt give a terminal size we go with SAK 2.5mm2 terminals as a standard. I was just curious to know if there was a standard procedure that can be worked through to achieve this size? The control panels contains instrumentation and power for an illuminated inspection window.
