Tent/Shed Stake Peg Anchorage 1

Large shed structures used in barns ( e.g.

are anchored into top soil using steel stakes/pegs.

The stakes only penetrate the topsoil, and I was wondering how "safe" is that. On what basis are these pegs designed (how will they resist uplift/provide support)? It does not sound very safe to me.

I'd say that falls into the "temporary" structure category. Fine for a stiff breeze, but anything like real wind will pull it out. That's why it's not a good idea to store anything of significant value in it for any period of time.

If you are specifically talking about " used in barns" then there is typical minimal wind, and the dirt is typically hard-packed. Nevertheless, the stakes are not intended for structural support, only for stabilization and prevention of movement. We've used large tents for company gatherings, and the expectation has always been that if serious weather were to occur, we "run, Forrest, run."
