Can someone clarify the meaning and purpose of the "A5 elongation" designation that seems to be common on european specs,..I understand it uses a gage length calculated from the cross section size. However,is it specific to a certain type of tensile specimen(s) or is it a generic elongation calculation that can be applicable to any type specimen dimension(ASTM E8, ISO 80, JIS #5,...)

TENSILE TEST, A5 ELONGATION

A5 was the symbol used to denote elongation in the now obsolete standard DIN 50145. The elongation was determined from a gage length = 5.56x[√]S0, where S0 is the original cross-sectional area. DIN EN 10002-1 is the superceding document, and A5 is now called A. There are other symbols used for elongation as well, such as A50 mm, etc.
