Thanks for the info. I have checked that site out before. Right now I am just trying to make somethinig simple and cheap that I can hook up to the serial port. Eventually I would like to make or buy a data logger so it would be more versitle and I could do other things with it. (When possible I like to make my own things because their usually less expensive, I can make it the way I want it and I can usually learn a lot from the experience). About 15 years ago with the help of a friend of mine at the time I made a circuit that I think used a 555 and a thermistor circuit that plugged into the joystick port of an old Atari computer. The computer counted the pulses which went faster or slower depending on the temperature. I don't remember much more thtn that.

There are numerous off the shelf temp loggers (some with humidity too) available. Last week I came across one that plugged right into a USB port to dump the data.

crunch53; You could get one of the digital temp sensors like the TC77 and then bit bang it with your serial or parallel port. Draws to little power you could power it thru an output pin. Possible be smaller than an RTD too.

You might want to take a look at the National LM34DZ temperature sensors. They are a TO-92 case with a wide input voltage range and have a direct output of 10mv per/deg F. Jameco sells these for about $2 each.

Yes I realise I did say Serial port, but It dosnt matter where I hook it up as long as it is fairly easy for now. As I learn more and find oter possabilities I want to do a lot more with it. Right now I want to collect the data say every minute or 5 or 10 and send it to an excel speadsheet or something to make a graph of what the temperature has been for the last day, week or month.

Dallas Semiconductor makes a serial digital thermometer chip; again, you'd have to write a little code to "bit bang" the commands in and data out.

Any one of these does what you want. Some better than others. What you want has been done a million times. The web abounds with complete designs including the software.

That what I was told also, but after working 10 and 12 hour days and driving hundreds of miles each day, I think they got it all wrong.
