I am looking for any research paper or technical document to determine how deep a post (T-post or wooden post) need to be driven based on height, fence type, soil type, lateral load on the post etc. for any fence (silt fence, chain-link fence etc.). My understanding is that industry standard or location wise standard is being used, however I appreciate if anyone can provide any technical background behind it. Thank you!

Chain Link Fence Wind Load Guide for the Selection of Line Post and Line Post Spacing

I imagine other industry groups have their own standards.

It boils down to:

1) What is the load on the fence? Security/impact? Wind? Seismic? Hydraulic?
2) What is the post spacing?
3) What is the load per post?
4) What kind of foundation will it have? (Let's assume embedded post.)
5) Design post embedment. (You're apparently a geotechnical engineer, so I won't get into this part.)

Thanks for the update pham...

There was an old ASAE EP486 design guideline that you can find fairly easily via google. This is what I use for pretty much all of my embedded post checks.

Thanks, jayrod. I've never seen such an in-depth look at embedded post design. It answers a lot the questions that other, more general, sources leave unanswered.

Glad to share, I felt the same when I first came across it. Now it's my go to embedded post reference. It's referenced directly in the NFBA Post-Frame Building Design Manual for designing the foundations.

jayrod12 beat me to it, that would also be my recommendation. I believe the latest version was updated/published in 2017.
