What's it like to tap D2 tool steel for an M2 hole? Limited space so using this size.

Drill a hole, break a tap, extract tap, break another tap, extract tap, break yet another tap, drill bigger hole insert Helicoil.

If this is for that little press tool that you are having such problems with I suggest you use a root rather than tap M2, see special blade punches on the link below and you will get the idea.

You will get the best results using a rigid drill press for alignment and a spiral bottoming tap such as used in CNC equipment. I have always used Rapid Tap lubricant for the best results.

Make sure the work is clamped and you only go a quarter of a turn at a time and back off to break the chip...don't get greedy and it will work. I wouldn't go a full 70-75% on the thread, 50-60% Max!

Tapped lots of D2, you sure you want a 2mm threaded hole...thats asking for trouble! I wouldn't do it, I would find another solution....like a through hole and a recessed threaded insert in the bottom side. Keenserts work great for this type of application with a drop of red locktite instead of using the punch tabs to lock it. To use the Keensert you thread a 50% hole not a 70-75% full thread, much easier and safer to tap.

goign to go with an m3 instead. thought i needed to have screws flush with part so was countersinking plate but it's ok to use shcs's. can you provide a link to the keensers you mentioned? cheers.
