If a tape deck was plugged into the earphone jack on a desktop orlaptop computer, would it damage either the sound card in the computer or the tape deck?

It shouldn't damage either end.

No, I do it all the time (more often connecting a minidisk recorder headphone socket to the mic socket on the pc, but sometimes the other way round). Works fine.

Just remember to start with the volume turned down, then wind it up gently until you reach a sensible signal level.

By the way, I don't know if you specifically wanted the audio on a tape or if you were just looking for a way of saving the audio for later, but there are also programs that can capture live streams of audio to the sound card ( The advantage of this is that everything stays in a digital format.

Hey thanks loads, guys, for the responses......At first, I thought that perhaps the emoney.al.ru stuff might not be legal to use (it being from Russia).
