tap problem

I have a large galvanized steel bucket and I want to tap the bottom side so the fluid in the bucket can be poured out via 1/2 inch pvc pipe.

I was hoping to get some advice on what would be the best/easiest way of doing this with standard parts?

Don't ruin the bucket. When have you ever been able to sell a bucket with a hole in it? Put a submersible pump in the bucket and run the PVC pipe over the lip. Resale of the bucket will be at a much higher price.

I didn’t realize buckets were so valuable in Gibraltar. In areas of the world where buckets are less valuable…

Cut a hole in the bucket. Use a bulkhead fitting such as one of these:

Valuable? Well I can tell that you have not been across the Straits to the beginnings of the Sahara in Morocco. Its not so much for the bucket itself, but rather for what's not in the bucket. If the bucket had water in it, instead of a hole, it could even save your life. In Saudi Arabia, if you wanted to keep your bucket, the only way to do so was to keep your eyes on it, or ... make a hole in it.

Thanks jte. I think that a submersible pump is far more expensive than the bucket I have

I hear you, BigInch... But methinks I would get the water in the bucket a bit salty as I swam with it across the Strait to the Sahara, thus reducing its life saving potential!

Make a U-tube from the PVC pipe and start a siphon to drain the bucket.

Pour the water into a funnel with a 1/2 inch PVC pipe attached. Then you get to keep the bucket without a hole.
